Life Membership 2020
During the November 2020 Chung Wah Society AGM, Tina Griffiths was awarded life membership to the Chung Wah Society.
Ms Tina Griffiths
Tina Griffiths is a member of a special group of people who have found an amazing passion to promote the objectives and aims of the Chung Wah Society.
She first joined the Society in 1997, she was initially attracted by the development of the Dragon Boat Festival by Chung Wah Society. She became a strong member of the Chung Wah Dragon Boat Team bringing in many other new members and eventually represented the team in attending a regatta in Penang Malaysia.
As Tina became more and more involved with our Society, she soon joined the management committee under Uncle Adam Lowe and with her many experiences in organising functions and her personal business contacts, she was instrumental in rebirthing the much loved Dragon Ball which was so popular in the 1960’s. She managed to sign up the Sony Electronics Corporation as a major sponsor, and it was to become one of the biggest Social “Black Tie” events on the Darwin Social Calendar. The “Sony Dragon Ball” held at the Casino was not only a massive fund raiser, it raised the profile of our Society in the community.
Tina had incredible energy and social skills and focussed those skills in co-organising the Chinese New Year Banquets with Daryl Chin which grew to the point where the event became so popular, we had to move out of Chung Wah
Hall to larger venues to cater for the demand for tickets by friends of our Society.
Tina, felt that our Society needed to “Catch up with the times” and worked with Uncle Adam, Daryl Chin and later with myself in raising over $113,000.00 in grants to upgrade the Museum, Hall and Kitchen.
As one thing lead to another, she eventually secured the Community Benefit Grant of $450,000.00 to hold the Chinese New Year Festival for three years, working day and night inspiring volunteers to make the event so popular at a time of the year (Wet Season) when tourism is at a low. The event is now a Calendar Event with the Locals and Tourists.
She was instrumental in attracting the NT Government to engage Chung Wah Society as the Venue for the now popular Laksa Festival, which is about to happen again.
For the past several years she was the coordinator for Membership, Car Parking and Hall Hire which work well with her “Business Sense” in managing these intensive and demanding areas of management.
Tina says she is proud and inspired by being part of the Loong Tang Chin Family (Loong Tang Chin was a Founding Member of our Society). Especially proud of her father (Dick Griffiths) contribution as our valued Patron and the fact that our Board Room is named the “Rose Room” after her Late Mother for the massive contribution by the Griffiths Family.
We are blessed when people like Tina who come along and see how that they can contribute to the community. Society today is in such a state that it is scarce to find such unselfish and generous commitment.
We would like you, our valued members, to consider and endorse the proposal for Tina to be honoured with life membership as a token of her tireless work and inspiration to all.
